CPNJ created the position of Coordinator of Behavioral Support Services in 2004 to strengthen the provision of services to our consumers. The primary goal of the new department is to help staff identify and implement positive and proactive behavior support systems. CPNJ views any behavior that impedes a consumer's pursuit of his or her personal goals or that affects their environment so as to impede another consumer's efforts to be an area we must address. With the Coordinator's training and support, staff learns how to respond to behavior issues with proactive and preventive strategies.
In addition to providing training for all staff, the Coordinator has hired Behavior Skills Instructors at our Horizon School, Horizon High School and our Adult Training Centers. Those instructors will assist staff on a daily basis to help them develop and implement appropriate, positive behavior interventions. Also, they may observe staff to help them evaluate and modify the behavior interventions when necessary to achieve the best possible outcomes.
CPNJ has developed a Behavior Intervention Policy Manual that will provide guidelines and techniques to ensure that similar behaviors are met with uniform, least restrictive and proactive intervention methods throughout the agency.
